School Resource Officer (SRO)
In September of 1999, the Jefferson Twp. Police Department implemented a School Resource Officer Program in cooperation with the Jefferson Twp. Public Schools.
The department applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Policing, to help fund the program.
The program provides an emphasis on the High School and Middle School, but also includes all five elementary schools, which are White Rock School, Milton School, Cozy Lake School on the Milton side of town, and Stanlick School and E.T. Briggs School on the Lake Hopatcong side of town. Some of the duties include student & parent assistance, provide & assist with school security, and serve as an instructor for specialized programs covering a wide range of topics such as DARE, crime prevention, criminal law, driver safety, drug & alcohol education, bike safety, and others upon request. The School Resource Officer works closely with the school administration to provide a safe environment that is conducive to learning.
